Collagen Corneal Cross Linking

What is:
Corneal Cross Linking

corneal cross linkingCorneal Collagen Cross linking with Riboflavin (B2 Vitamin) (CXL) is a developing country keratoconus treatment. CXL works by increasing Collagen Cross Linking, which are the natural "anchors" within the cornea. These anchors are responsible for ensuring that the bulging cornea, and always steep and irregular. This is an important issue

During corneal crosslinking treatment Tailored riboflavin drops saturate the cornea, which is then activated by ultraviolet light. This process has been demonstrated in the laboratory and clinical studies, in order to increase the amount of collagen cross-linking in the cornea and the corneal done.

So what is this Collagen CrossLinking?

Collagen Corneal CrosslinkingCollagen Cross Linking is not a cure for keratoconus. The goal of this treatment is to arrest until progression of keratoconus, and thereby prevent further deterioration of vision and the need for corneal transplantation. Glasses or contact lenses anyway after the crosslinking treatment is necessary but it is anticipated that it could limit further deterioration of vision.
This method, developed at the Technical University of Dresden, Germany, has been shown to slow or stop the progression of keratoconus in the published European studies. CXL is currently in the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) clinical tests.
